STORY WALK®

Picture
The books are in for the families that participated in our StoryWalk® ! Our director has made phone calls to those families to arrange a curbside pickup time so you can get your free books.
Picture
Chesley Memorial Library’s very first StoryWalk® was a success! Participants read “Bear Says Thanks” as they made their way from one reading station to another.  The Storywalk® was held at the Route 4 Northwood Recreation Fields on Saturday, November 14.  Children and their families were be able to enjoy the fresh air outside with an invigorating combination of exercise and reading to promote health and literacy.  The reading stations were far apart enough to follow social distancing guidelines and masks were available if needed.  There was no cost to attend and participating families will receive a book that they can pick up at the library.

“Bear Says Thanks” by Karma Wilson (illustrated by Jane Chapman) will set the mood for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday!  Bear, all alone and bored in his cave, decides to hold a feast but his cupboards are empty.  His friends arrive with food and remind him that although he may not have any food, he has stories to share and they are all thankful.

The StoryWalk Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont, and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg Hubbard Library.  The Chesley Memorial Library is able to offer the StoryWalk® program through a recurring grant from the Robert C. Grano Charitable Fund to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his father’s immigration to the United States on October 28, 1920.  The StoryWalk® is the first program held as part of the “Joseph Grano Children’s Initiative” to promote exploration of the natural world, music, art, diverse cultures, adventure travel, and craftsmanship.

Read J.K. Rowlings' new story online,

Help J. K. Rowlings Illustrate This Story!
The most exciting part, for me, at least, is that I’d like you to illustrate The Ickabog for me. Every day, I’ll be making suggestions for what you might like to draw.

You can enter the official competition being run by my publishers, for the chance to have your artwork included in a printed version of the book due out later this year. I’ll be giving suggestions as to what to draw as we go along, but you should let your imagination run wild.

I won’t be judging the competition. Each publisher will decide what works best for their editions. However, if you, your parent or your guardian would like to share your artwork on Twitter using the hashtag #TheIckabog, I’ll be able to see it and maybe share and comment on it!

When the book is published in November, I’m going to donate all my royalties to help people who have been affected by the coronavirus. We’ll give full details later in the year.

National Library Week
April 19 - 25, 2020

Picture
National Library Week (April 19 - 25, 2020) is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and library workers and to promote library use and support. From free access to books and online resources for families to library business centers that help support entrepreneurship and retraining, libraries offer opportunity to all. The theme for National Library Week 2020 is " Find Your Place at the Library," and Olympic medalists Maia and Alex Shibutani will serve as 2020 National Library Week Honorary Chairs.

As the impact of the COVID-19 crisis continues to evolve and change the work of libraries and library workers, libraries are proving resourceful and resilient, serving as a rich pipeline for content, delivering access to ebooks, movies, music, video games, virtual storytimes and activities, and so much more.

Just as libraries are pivoting in response to the current situation, the ALA is changing the focus of its annual National Library Week celebration, which will be held April 19-25, 2020. The theme for National Library Week (NLW) 2020, “Find your place at the library,” was chosen before the emergence of the global pandemic. To acknowledge our altered landscape, ALA flipped the script a bit on the theme. “Find the library at your place” highlights how libraries are offering virtual services and digital content their communities need now more than ever.

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and observed in libraries across the country each April. All types of libraries - school, public, academic and special - participate.

Follow National Library Week activities at your library, the American Library Association, and I Love Libraries on social media by tracking the hashtags:

NATIONAL SCRABBLE DAY
Monday, April 13

The library will create a floor sized Scrabble board where everyone can have some fun while visiting the library. Patrons of all ages are encouraged to participate and try it out.
According to the website National Calendar Day : "National Scrabble Day is observed annually on April 13th. Originally named Lexiko and then Criss-Cross Words, Alfred Mosher Butts eventually settled on the name Scrabble. The amateur artist and unemployed architect developed the word game in the midst of the depression.  Still, it wasn’t until 1948, a final name change and a trademark that Butts finally began to produce the game.   Scrabble is played with two to four players who score points by forming words from individual lettered tiles on a game board marked with a 15 x 15 grid.
In the United States, the name Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro, Inc. Scrabble is sold in 121 countries with 29 different language versions. Worldwide, over One hundred and fifty million sets have been sold with sets being found in nearly one-third of American homes."

"Winnie the Pooh has been a childhood favorite for generations. Originally created in 1926, his stories have sparked wholesome, honey-loving, childhood dreams for nearly a century. Although there are many other characters within the Winnie the Pooh universe (Kanga, Rabbit, Roo, and Tigger — just to name a few), there is not doubt that the bear wearing a red shirt — with his fist shoved into a jar of honey — is most certainly a fan favorite. National Winnie the Pooh Day, on January 18, is your time to return to the Hundred Acre Wood!" (quoted from: https://nationaltoday.com/national-winnie-the-pooh-day/)
