Northwood Congregational Church
The Chesley Memorial Library and the Friends of the Northwood Libraries sponsored "Humor&Harmony” featuring Rebecca Rule and Cordwood at the Northwood Congregational Church on Saturday, October 26, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Special guest Joel Sherburne from Calef’s Country Store was also on hand to delight the audience with his own special brand of humor. Suggested donation is $6.00 per person at the door. Refreshments were available to purchase and the Friends will held a silent auction to raise funds to benefit the library.

Cordwood is a bluegrass and folk quartet made up of instrumental, vocal, and recording artists from Northwood, Durham, and Deerfield. This is not your local neighborhood hobby band. They are a fine group of seasoned New England musicians. Each can hold his or her own at field picking or a back stage jam, and yet, as a band, they present a highly polished on-stage performance. All four members of Cordwood are storytellers and songwriters, creating original material for instrumentalists who can sing and harmonize, sometimes taking the lead vocal, other times hanging back and lending two, three, or even four-part harmonies to a song. Cordwood provides a unique sound to both originals and the covers they perform. Their tunes remain heartfelt and down-home. The band’s material is a mixture of traditional bluegrass, folk, and swing. Cordwood is Wini Scovill Young on banjo and guitar, Walt Kutylowski on bass, Al Pratt on guitar, and Bob Young on mandolin, names you may remember from Big Chicken, The Deerfield Coffeehouse Band, and Fat Hands.

Nocturnal Animals at the Masonic Hall was fun for all!
Dover Children’s Museum presented a wonderful children’s program of nocturnal animals for our Chesley Memorial Library at the Masonic Hall on Friday, September 20.
The presenter, Colie, answered questions about nocturnal animals before discussing all the things that night time animals have to adapt to the darkness. The children went to four different stations to have a hands on learning experience about the animals.
Station 1 held projects with footprints where children attempted to use stamp tools replicating paw prints into moon sand. The Station 2 had children make bracelets with different beads including glow-in-the-dark ones. At Station 3, children and parents got to smell scents and listen to sounds mimicking how a nocturnal animal would. The sounds were created by using two spoons lightly tapped together at different angles from a child while they tried to determine where the sound was coming from. Another challenge here was to take a flashlight and have one child close their eyes while a second child held the flashlight and aimed it into the other child's eyes when they opened them. The goal being to observe the reaction of the pupil in the eye to watch how it changes. Station 4 included the star constellations based on animals where children used pegs or string to make a constellation.
The presentation was wrapped up with children sharing what they learned. The final project was making circuits to light up their very own constellation drawings! There were several wonderfully decorated, colored, and lit up images from all the children who participated.
Everyone enjoyed doing the projects and were excited to take home several their projects and free gifts.
A huge thank you to all those that came and participated in this free library sponsored event!

Bottle Rockets at Bean Hole Bash were fantastic!
It was a beautiful day for launching Bottle Rockets, Kids of all ages joined in - wondering what a Bottle Rocket would do. Would it flop? Did it make any noise? Would it really fly? No one really knew, not until they built one of their very own, filled it with air from a bicycle pump and watched and waited in great anticipation.......Everyone was thrilled with the results!
The Friends of the Library “blasted off” at the Bean Hole Bash this summer! Thanks so much for showing us all how to make these Bottle Rockets and launching them for us - Rick Alleva, Ed.D., UNH Cooperative Extension!

"How Chubby the Cat was Found!"
By Karen Howe and Denise F. Brown. Illustrated by Denise F. Brown of Portsmouth, New Hampshire www.chubbythecat.com You can find Karen at the Northwood Post Office. Karen originally wanted to tell a story about how she came to love the cat she adopted from a neighbor, but after a vet visit, Chubby took off. When the cat finally came back, the cousins reworked the story to be about Chubby's disappearance. The book's mission is how to go about finding your own pet and information on what to do that will assist in getting your pet back. From Amazon: " This is the incredible true story of a brave little cat called Chubby who survives four weeks outside during the coldest month of the year. Temperatures were often below zero degrees, but his thick winter coat kept him warm during the snowstorms and when the wind blew on his face. Chubby is a smart cat. He knew how to hunt for food and find shelter to keep himself safe. It is a story of never giving up hope of finding him, with a happy ending. Great book for animal lovers. Readers love the full color map, Mission statement about helping people find a lost pet, Making a plan to find your lost pet, and photos of the real Chubby the cat who was named by a four-year-old girl when he was a roly poly kitten. Big Blooming Book Sale was Saturday, May 4

The Friends of the Library collected books for the Big Blooming Book Sale held on Saturday, May 4, at the Masonic Hall in Northwood.
Proceeds will be used for library projects throughout the year. This year the Friends helped pay for the new walkway, museum passes, and subscriptions to research services for genealogy. Friends of the Library also sponsor staff appreciation days, the annual Humor & Harmony show, and the popular “Soups On with Pie” supper.

"Friends First Book Sale is a Blooming Success
The Friends of the Chesley Library thank book donors, buyers, and volunteers for their help with the first annual Big Blooming Book Sale. Thanks also to the Masons for their generous loan of their hall where the sale was held. The sale netted over a thousand dollars. This money will be used for library projects and expenses. Projects have included repairs to the walkway, museum passes, subscriptions for genealogical services, and the picnic table among many others.
The Big Blooming Book Sale was an especially satisfying fundraiser. People who donated books were happy to find a good cause to support and good homes for their treasures. People who bought books were happy to be able to choose from the hundreds of offerings. Picture books sold for a quarter each. Young readers seemed to have a great time filling their bags with these books, many of them like new. Fiction fans sought out their favorite authors in stacks sorted alphabetically by many hands. The history, how-to, and crafts sections were also popular.
One young reader came in looking for books on Marco Polo. Sure enough, one was eventually located. A perfect fit.
In the category of “this is amazing,” a woman picked up a book that looked familiar. She opened it to a bookmarked page and there was her family name. She turned to the front cover and there was her own name, handwritten. This book — Who’s Who of 1915 — had been a favorite when she was a child. It had been lost or given away in a move. Forty years later, it was back in her hands. She couldn’t have been more tickled.
The Friends meet (usually) on the 4th Monday of each month at the library at 6:45. New members always welcome. If you’d like to be on our e-mail list, sign up at the library. In addition to the book sale, we sponsor Humor and Harmony (a variety show featuring the band Cordwood and local humorist RebeccaRule) and the ever popular Soup and Pie, pick-up or eat in, held in early November." - Update via Rebecca Rule

Nation Scrabble Day was Saturday April 13th - WORDS were the challenge of the day!
The library created a floor sized scrabble board where everyone could have some fun.
--------------------------------------------
From the National Day Calendar website: "National Scrabble Day is observed annually on April 13th. Originally named Lexiko and then Criss-Cross Words, Alfred Mosher Butts eventually settled on the name Scrabble. The amateur artist and unemployed architect developed the word game in the midst of the depression. Still, it wasn't until 1948, a final name change and a trademark that Butts finally began to produce the game. Scrabble is played with two to four players who score points by forming words from individual lettered tiles on a game board marked with a 15 x 15 grid. In the United States, the name Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro, Inc. Scrabble is sold in 121 countries with 29 different language versions. Worldwide, over one hundred and fifty million sets have been sold with sets being found i nearly one-third of American homes."
